Maradona — Genius and Chaos

Some footballers master the game. Maradona seemed to bend it around himself.

He played with a low centre of gravity, a fierce left foot and an almost impossible relationship with the ball. Defenders could crowd him, kick him and try to close every route, yet he would somehow emerge with the ball still under control. His dribbling was not simply about speed. It came from balance, imagination and the ability to change direction before an opponent had understood what he was planning.

But technique only explains part of Maradona.

He played with emotion exposed. Every match looked personal, every challenge felt like an argument and every moment of pressure seemed to make him more determined to take control. He carried the confidence of the street footballer, the anger of the outsider and the responsibility of someone who knew that millions of people were placing their hopes on him.

Born into a working-class family and raised in Villa Fiorito, Maradona’s rise gave him a connection with supporters that went far beyond admiration for a gifted player. People saw themselves in him: imperfect, defiant, expressive and unwilling to forget where he came from. He could be theatrical, confrontational, generous, self-destructive and completely magnetic—sometimes within the same afternoon.

Mexico 1986 brought every part of his football together. As Argentina’s captain, he scored five goals, created five more and directly influenced ten of the team’s fourteen goals on the way to becoming world champions. Against England, the contradictions at the heart of Maradona were captured within four extraordinary minutes: first the cunning and controversy of the “Hand of God”, then the breathtaking run that became known as the “Goal of the Century”.

One moment broke the rules. The next seemed to rewrite what was possible within them.

That tension sits at the heart of this design.

The front graphic reduces Maradona to an unmistakable code: the initial, the number 10 and a thin line of Argentina blue cutting through the image. It is deliberately restrained. By this point, a name is hardly necessary. The number alone carries the weight of the player, the captain and the mythology that followed him.

The back is louder, layered and deliberately unsettled. A central portrait captures Maradona looking upwards, surrounded by fractured images that suggest memory, pressure and movement. His face repeats and breaks apart across the composition, reflecting the many versions of Diego that existed at once: footballer, leader, rebel, idol and target.

The vertical “MARADONA” gives the piece the feeling of an archival poster, while the number 10 anchors everything to the shirt he made iconic. Smaller photographs recall moments of triumph and raw emotion rather than presenting a neat career timeline. Hand-drawn circles, arrows, registration marks and torn-paper edges make the design feel assembled rather than polished—appropriate for a story that was never clean or predictable.

“Balón cerca. Control total.”—ball close, total control—describes the technical foundation of his game. He kept the ball so close that it often appeared attached to him, even when running through tackles.

“Talento. Presión. Rebeldía.”—talent, pressure, rebellion—describes the character behind it.

And at the centre is the phrase that brings the entire design together: “Genio y caos.” Genius and chaos.

Maradona was both. The brilliance cannot be separated from the disorder, and the beauty of his football cannot be fully understood without the intensity surrounding it. He was never distant, polished or easy to contain. He made people feel something—joy, anger, disbelief, devotion—and that is why his story still occupies a place larger than statistics or trophies.

This edition remembers Maradona at his most iconic: Argentina’s number 10, captain in 1986, the ball at his feet and the world unable to look away.
