Sócrates — The Doctor

Some players are remembered for what they won. Sócrates is remembered for what he represented.

The captain of Brazil’s unforgettable 1982 side played football with an intelligence and freedom that felt completely his own. Tall, elegant and seemingly unhurried, he saw passes before anyone else and turned the backheel from a flourish into a genuine weapon. He could control the rhythm of a match without appearing to chase it. There was always a sense that he was thinking one move ahead.

That intelligence extended far beyond the pitch. Sócrates qualified as a doctor while building his football career, earning the nickname “O Doutor”. He read widely, wrote, discussed politics and spoke openly about the society around him. At a time when footballers were generally expected to play and keep quiet, he refused to separate the game from the wider world.

At Corinthians, he became one of the leading figures in Democracia Corinthiana. Players, coaches and other members of staff were given a voice in decisions traditionally made above them. During the final years of Brazil’s military dictatorship, the movement grew into something much larger than an experiment in running a football club. Corinthians carried messages supporting democracy onto the pitch, while Sócrates used his profile to argue publicly for political freedom and direct elections.

He was also full of contradictions, which only made him more compelling. A doctor who smoked. An elite athlete who enjoyed late nights, conversation and a drink. A deep thinker who played with instinct. A natural leader who believed authority should be shared. Sócrates never fitted the polished image of the modern professional, and he had little interest in trying. He lived according to his own ideas, consequences included.

The design brings those different sides of him together.

On the front, the crowned number 8 is kept deliberately simple. It references the shirt number he made his own while presenting him as a different kind of football royalty—not a manufactured superstar, but a leader respected for his presence, intelligence and independence.

The back expands his story through a layered, archival composition. His portrait dominates the design, surrounded by torn-paper textures, matchday imagery and the visual language of old newspapers and political posters. The stadium crowd grounds the piece in football, while the handwritten marks and imperfect edges give it the feeling of something assembled from a living archive rather than a conventional player graphic.

The Portuguese phrases woven through the artwork carry the ideas at the heart of his story: “futebol é liberdade”—football is freedom—and “Doutor da bola. Democracia em campo.”—doctor of the ball, democracy on the pitch. References to the yellow shirt, Brazil and 1982 connect the design to the national side he captained, a team that failed to lift the World Cup but became one of the most loved and influential sides the game has produced.

This edition is not simply about a brilliant midfielder. It is about a footballer who treated the game as a form of expression, leadership as a responsibility and freedom as something worth speaking about.

Sócrates played with his head up. He lived the same way.
